Women of 1916

St Mary's University College, Belfast (2016)

Women of 1916 is a series of 20 miniature portraits of the women of the Easter Rising to complement my larger exhibition 'In This Supreme Hour'.

It has been well documented that the role of women during the Rising was largely overlooked on its 50th anniversary in 1966. Ireland today is a much different society.

The work captures women from a broad range of roles and backgrounds. Not only did the women nurse the wounded and feed the troops, they ran perilous routes between garrisons delivering instructions, and a few saw active combat. And they came from all over - Dublin, Belfast, England and France.

Only a selection of the portraits are shown below. All are still available for exhibition or purchase.
